Postcard Design
For this project we were task with making a postcard for a high end store. This store is hosting a fashion show and we needed to make a postcard with the tagline "Sizzle, Dazzle, Wow" on the front and some information including lines of text on the back. As was required I started by cranking out some thumbnails. I found I have the hardest time coming up with ideas and once I have one that I even kind of like I get stuck on it. From the thumbnails we moved on to a fewer number of tighter thumbnails. These were just to really see if the designs that seemed good in step one would actually pan out as a design. In this step I threw out one of my favorites that looked good in my minds eye but I couldn't get to work on the page. from there it was on to our intermediate comps that were to narrow our scope and rally in on an idea.
Unfortunately this is where I made a huge mistake and neither of the designs I chose to go with looked very good in the end. Instead of taking my project back a step and fixing it I chose to push forward and thought I could fix it on the final but in ultimately it didn't get any better. From there I make my final marker composition with the hope of ironing out my mistakes from the last comp but instead the final was worse because of the size. A huge issue I faced is that the markers don't look good on huge chunks of the same color. I scraped the final comp once and started again but again it didn't look the way I wanted. At this point I was too invested so I just finished and made my final digital version and printed it.
My printer then decided to print streaky on all of the card stock paper I owned and not the cheap paper I had for some beautiful reason. At this point I was a little short on time and patience so I called it good enough and gathered my work and turned it in. This is not my best work and I am capable of more. If I was wise I would have seen the trouble ahead and redone the intermediate comps for a better design but I did not see that far into the future at that time. A time I wish I would have had more time was at the end so I could have gone to campus to make a better print but with commitments later on of the day I printed I couldn't find the time. This project chewed me up and spit me out. I think I learned from it and that is the goal, right?
