Type Figure
Overview
A type figure is an image completely made of text. In this project we were tasked to make a type figure without warping any text. To get the affects you can see here I used different point sized text, two different font, and text on paths.
Research and Brainstorming
To prepare to embark on this project I looked for examples that would follow the requirements and couldn't find much. I found many type figures that used warped text and letters instead of strings of text. I then searched for an image I'd like to recreate. I was left with two of a monkey and one of a guy with a laptop. I narrowed it down by choosing which monkey was my favorite.
Blocked Figure #1
I started with the person and as you can see I learned a lot through the project. I disliked everything I made with this image and so I moved on quickly.
Blocked Figure #2
On my second image I followed the same process as the first. I however liked the results much more. I blocked it more thoughtfully and the text seemed to lay itself out. I liked the look of the outlining text and continued with that idea.
Computer Area Studies
On this step I moved to the computer and used Adobe Illustrator and used its type tools to test areas I thought may be hard. I practiced with the face and the feet. The face was fun because I could use the text more creatively. The feet (and therefore the hands) were the thing I struggled with the most and still am not confident on.
Computer Progressions
I then went to work on making a good draft. I started with a copy to start testing the outlining text from the original blocked copy I liked what was coming out but knew it needed work. on my second draft I was already happy but just needed final touches to fix.
Final Prints
Once I had a final completed design I made a presentation version and a composite image with printers marks and slugs. I think it looks good and am proud of the final work.
